Roses are Red… April 30, 2010

Filed under: Articles,Did You Know? — dailydoseoffiber @ 6:12 pm

.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner.  I’m still in shock that the month of April is already over, and now I have to hustle and think about what I want to get my mom for Mother’s Day.  Flowers are always a good idea.  But if you want to combine the sentimentality of flowers with practicality, look no further.  Learn how to fold your very own towel origami rose using only 2 hand towels!

.

First, you will need two hand towels, preferably one should be green for the stem and the other should be red or white (whatever color you want your rose to be).

1.  Fold over your green hand towel at an angle from one corner to the middle of the opposite short side.

2.  Make a conical roll by rolling along the folded edge while holding a finger on the corner where the fold starts.  Leave a triangle of towel unrolled.

3.  Pinch the unrolled corner into a leaf shape.  This forms the stem of the towel rose.

4.  Fold your red towel into thirds the long way.

5.  Fold over  the corner on one end.  This end is going to be the center of the towel rose.

6.  Roll the folded end towards the center about one turn.

7.  Twist the unrolled portion of the towel 180 degrees with a nice clean fold.

8.  Roll over the twisted section.  Fold the end of the roll over towards the inside at a 45 degree angle.

9.  Roll the flower towel the rest of the way.  If you’re lucky it will work out that the end of the rose will tuck into the fold created by the twist.

10.  Add the rose flower towel to the stem towel and you have a rose made out of towels!

Grass Family April 15, 2010

Isn’t it funny that a mouse and an elephant are in the same animal family?  One is so small and furry, and the other is so large with tough skin.  Well, grass and bamboo are very similar.  Did you ever think that the lawn in your front yard or at the park is related to the tall, hallow stalks of bamboo?  Well, bamboo is the largest member of the grass family.

.

Bamboo primarily grows in Asia, South America and Africa and there are about 500 different varieties.  Bamboo has smooth, hallow jointed stems and retain water well. It can also grow as fast as 41 centimeters a day and reach up to 10 stories high (36 meters). Bamboo is also a very useful resource that we have made many things from, such as houses, weapons,  bowls and utensils, food and clothing.

.

At Pure Fiber, we have chose to make our products from 100% viscose from bamboo for many reasons.  One of those is because bamboo is one of the most sustainable resources as well as add quality, strength and structure to our products.  Our bamboo towels are ultra soft and absorb just as much water as cotton.  Our bamboo bed sheets have a silky and soft texture while still maintaining durability and breathability.

April Showers… April 13, 2010

April showers bring May flowers…

.

This week would have been the appropriate time for this article because we had a little rain yesterday, but this is not a weather report.  We’re going to talk about a different type of shower – your bathroom shower.  Below are a few tips to keeping your shower walls clean.

1. Everyday Wipe Down: After showering, you should wipe all the shower walls.  Standing water is one of the main causes of mold and mildew.

.

2. Toilet Bowl Cleaner: Once a week, use a toilet bowl cleaner (the clear gel cleaner, not the blue colored cleaner) to clean the walls of your shower.  Apply the cleaner and let it stand for about 15 minutes.  Then scrub down the walls a brush.  These cleaners are great to remove mildew buildups.

.

3. Rusty Issues: For rust residue, use Limeaway or CLR.

.

4.  Tough Stuff: For for stubborn soap scum build ups mix: 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/3 cup ammonia, 1/4 cup white vinegar and 6 cups of water.  If you have a spray bottle, add the mixture and spray onto your shower walls.  Let the cleaner sit for 15 minutes, then scrub your walls.

.

5.  Extra Protection: For more protection and shine, you can use car wax on your shower tile, once or twice a year.

Rug or Mat? What’s the difference? April 9, 2010

.

Have you ever wondered what’s the difference between a bath rug and a bath mat?  They seem so similar, so what makes them different?

.

The biggest differences between the two bath accessories are their location in the bathroom and their purpose.  Bath mats are usually located right outside of the bathtub or shower – or “wet zone” – and are usually used to dry one’s feet after showering.  While a bath rug is designed to be placed in the “dry area” of bathroom and its main purpose is to add color and style to the room.

.

When selecting a bath mat, the qualities you may look for are easily washable, a non-slip backing and made of absorbent material – their functional properties.  For bath rugs, most people look for its aesthetic qualities, such as color, pattern and shape.

.

Keep an eye out for Pure Fiber’s bath mats coming soon!

How to keep your kitchen germ free! April 6, 2010

A kitchen can be one of the places in your house breeding the most germs and bacteria.  Below are a few tips to minimize these harmful germs that may cause viruses and bacteria growth.

.

1.  Microwave your sponge and dish towel:

To help eliminate germs, simply moisten the sponge or towel and put it in the microwave for 2 minutes.  Then remove it (careful it’ll be hot!) and rinse thoroughly.  Even new sponges can carry millions of germs after a couple uses.

.

2.  Change your dish towels daily:

Use a separate towel to dry your hands, than the one you use to dry dishes and silverware with.  Use a clean towel to dry your dishes and let them air dry afterward.

.

3.  Keeping dish towels clean:

After cleaning with your dish towels, you may start noticing some stubborn stains.  Simply fill a large pot with clean water and bring it to a boil.  Add a small amount of bleach to your stained kitchen towels and put them in the boiling water.  Soon you’ll see the stains starting to disappear.  Change the water as many times as needed.  Once your towels are stain free, rinse them in the sink with lots of water and then air dry them.

.

4. Use anti-bacterial cleaner:

After handling raw meat make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.  Also use an anti-bacterial cleaner to wipe all the surfaces you worked on.  Afterward, follow tip #1 to sanitize your sponge.  Cleaning your cutting board in the dishwasher is also a good way to eliminate germs.  It’s also good practice to clean all your counters with an anti-bacterial spray.  After spraying your counters, let the cleaner sit for several minutes, then wipe clean.  Don’t forget to wipe the telephone too!

.

5. Bleach your sink:

About twice a month, fill your sink with warm water and add a cup of bleach.  Allow the water to sit for about an hour, then rinse.  The bleach is a great way to sanitize your sink, as well as make it shiny white again.  Bleach also removes hard water deposits!

.

Hopefully these tips help you keep your kitchen germ free!  At Pure Fiber, one way we like to keep our kitchens clean is by using our bamboo kitchen towels.  These towels are super absorbent and soft.  They are made with bamboo, making them naturally anti-bacterial and odor-resistant.
